What is Charge management?

Charge management is the combination of different solutions, such as an energy management platform, Renewable Fuel Units, flexibility and variable energy prices, to optimise the charging infrastructure and energy flows of a business. These solutions allow costs to be optimised, the grid connection to be used more efficiently and overload on the electricity grid to be avoided.

How? The charging profile of electric vehicles is matched to available capacity on the grid, locally generated solar energy and battery capacity.

Combination of solutions

Energy management platform
The platform offers real-time insight into the energy consumption of the charging plaza. This allows fleet managers to improve the efficiency of energy flows to and from the charging plaza. On-site assets can be controlled by Scholt Energy, such as vehicle charging powers.

Renewable Fuel Units
Certificates, known as Renewable Fuel Units, can be created for the kWh used to charge electric vehicles. Fuel suppliers in the Netherlands are obligated to increase the sustainability of part of their fuel mixture and can demonstrate this by purchasing Renewable Fuel Unit certificates. The implementation of these Units encourages electric charging and thus contributes to making road transport more sustainable. Charging electric vehicles with locally generated renewable energy and demonstrating this by means of an energy management platform can create as many as three times more Renewable Fuel Units. Scholt Energy trades these Units on the market, thereby creating an additional revenue model.

Flexibility
Smart control of charging stations, batteries and solar installations (flexibility) helps to better match the supply of and demand for electricity. This in turn means that charging infrastructure can better respond to variable energy prices or to surpluses/shortages on the national energy grid. In the event of a surplus of energy on the grid, charging stations can be directed to charge electric vehicles to the maximum. Scholt Energy operates automated systems that can manage this smart control in the most optimal way possible.

Variable energy prices
Electricity prices on the variable day-ahead market are determined on a daily basis on the basis of the current supply and demand situation in north-western Europe. With dynamic charging profiles, the day-ahead market offers a number of benefits, and you can take advantage of variable energy prices. Charge Management helps to keep energy consumption and costs under control.

Benefits of Charge management

  • Sustainability and savings
By reducing consumption peaks and by charging electric vehicles with renewable sources of energy, you reduce dependence on the energy grid. As a result, your business can be (partly) self-sufficient, you can save on your energy bills and contribute to the energy transition.

  • Smart charging
Electric vehicles can be smart-charged on the basis of occupancy, priority, weather forecasts and the energy market. With smart software, you can respond quickly to influencing factors, such as price fluctuations.

  • Revenue model
Charging with locally generated renewable energy generates (green) Renewable Fuel Units. Scholt Energy can then trade these Units on the energy market, thereby creating a new revenue model.

We optimised the charging infrastructure for Jan Bakker

Jan Bakker shares Scholt Energy’s ambition of making the Dutch transport industry more sustainable. After purchasing a fleet of twenty electric lorries, however, the business began to run into limitations on the electricity grid due to regional grid congestion. Working with HMB, Scholt Energy examined the options for using Jan Bakker’s charging infrastructure in the most energy-efficient way possible.
