What is green electricity?

Renewables generate electricity, or green electricity. Renewables that will be the most familiar are wind and solar, but there are others – hydropower, geothermal and biomass. Grey electricity is produced using exhaustible fossil fuels, like gas and coal, which are harmful to the environment.

Whether you’re a buyer or a producer, switching to green electricity helps to encourage the generation of renewable energy. Green electricity gives businesses a more sustainable image and helps them to achieve their sustainability goals more readily. What’s more, businesses may also be able to take advantage of government subsidy schemes. Producers of green electricity can also sell the electricity that they generate to buyers, or trade the electricity on the market to give them a revenue model.

Choose your method of purchasing or selling renewable energy

(C)PPA: for producers and buyers

The most far-reaching manner of purchasing and selling renewable electricity. A Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA) is a long-term agreement with which companies purchase renewable electricity from a specific producer operating a solar park or wind farm. By actively bringing producers and buyers together, Scholt Energy has evolved to become a leader in contracting CPPAs.

Green certificates: for buyers

Another way for businesses to purchase green electricity is using certificates or ‘Guarantees of Origin’ (GOOs). A GOO is documentary evidence that proves where sustainably generated energy originated. Scholt Energy takes care of the purchase of GOOs and links them to customers using green certificates. You can choose 100 per cent Dutch wind energy, European renewable energy and more.
